A Citizenship Ceremony with a Difference
Luis C Sotelo collaborates with 3 Colombian migrants and 4 University of East London Theatre Studies students to share with the audience stories about migration.
The piece A Citizenship Ceremony with a Difference (2013) is at once an artist-led social activity aiming at facilitating intercultural listening and a theatre arts event. It was directed by the author and presented at Brunel University (UK) early in 2013 in collaboration with 3 Colombian migrants into London and 4 University of East London theatre students. As a social activity, A Citizenship Ceremony with a Difference involved a process by which three real-life stories about migration are told, recorded, translated and then presented live to a group of people within the context of an activity framed as a ‘citizenship ceremony’. As a theatre arts event, this piece involves the presentation of the mentioned migrants, their stories and the performance of a ‘citizenship ceremony’ within the context of a black box theatre studio. The piece includes an open conversation between performers and audience (participants) at the end of the event as a means to address stereotypes and questions.
